From Executive Director Melissa Kenig
As the parent of an adult son with Asperger Syndrome, I found myself in a quandry once he graduated school and entered the real world. I’m not sure how you reconcile the inability to help your child succeed. As parents we all want to see our children become independent and happy. While we understand happiness for them might be different than it is for us, we can accept their choices as long as they are content. But when the choices erode away and our children are relegated to a life of struggle, then we reach a point for which we are unprepared. Such is the situation I found for myself when my adult son struggled to achieve independence.
If only there were a way for him to meander through the maze of information without causing confusion and anxiety. If only there was a way for him to avoid the road we were advised to travel, and be able to support himself with dignity. If only employers could recognize his gifts and work to understand his literal communications.
Hence the birth of Autism Works, the first of its kind service provider that concentrates on building competitive careers and independence for adults on the Spectrum by providing holistic lifetime support for relationships, careers, and life skills.
